- Most Old Town sights are walkable. Park on Union Street or use the Bon Accord car park, then walk east to King's College. Footdee is 20 minutes from the city centre on foot. Walk the coastal path from Stonehaven harbour to Dunnottar Castle (2km, 30 min each way) for the most dramatic approach. The Art Deco pool books up fast in summer. Balmoral Estate grounds open April to late July, closing when the Royal Family arrives in August. Check the estate website before visiting and book tours in advance. Check A939 Lecht road conditions at traffic.gov.scot before heading north to Dufftown. The road closes in heavy snow. Fill up with fuel in Braemar; no petrol stations for 60km north. Book Glenfiddich tours online; walk-ins are turned away at peak season. Balvenie Castle ruins are accessed from the Glenfiddich car park and are rarely crowded. Try cullen skink at the Cullen Bay Hotel or the Royal Oak pub. Bow Fiddle Rock is 2km east at Portknockie with a short coastal path to the viewpoint above the arch. Aberdeen Airport is 10km northwest of the city centre. Return hire cars at the airport or city centre depots. Trains run direct to Edinburgh in 2.5 hours from Aberdeen station.
