The Algarve packs an extraordinary range of coastal scenery into a short stretch of road: medieval towns on river estuaries, golden limestone cliffs drilled through with sea caves, wide barrier-island beaches and a surf-town at the edge of the continent. This route drives it end to end, spending a night in Tavira before heading west through Faro, the fishing village of Carvoeiro (base for the Benagil Cave boat tour), the walled town of Lagos with its Ponta da Piedade arches, and finally Sagres, where the Atlantic pounds two headlands at once. Driving legs are short, the roads are good, and most days leave plenty of time for boat tours, cliff walks and beach afternoons.

Ferries to Ilha de Tavira run from Quatro Aguas pier, 2 km east of town. Check the last return time before heading out.

Book Benagil Cave boat tours at least 24 hours ahead in high season. Tours depart from Benagil beach, a short drive east of Carvoeiro.
The western Algarve's most complete stop: a walled 16th-century town with a covered market, good restaurants and direct access to Ponta da Piedade. The promontory, 2.5 km south of the marina, is a formation of golden limestone arches, sea stacks and grottos. Kayak tours from the marina take you through them from below.

Walk down from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse to the coves at low tide for the best views. Arrive before 10am in peak season to find parking.

Cabo de Sao Vicente draws large coach tour groups mid-morning. Drive out at dusk for a quieter visit and a clear Atlantic sunset.

A vast sea cave with a domed skylight and internal beach, accessible only by boat or kayak. Tours from Carvoeiro or Benagil beach typically last 1 to 2 hours.

A promontory of golden limestone arches, sea stacks and grottos 2.5 km south of Lagos marina. Walk down to the coves at low tide or take a kayak tour from below.

A wide, uncrowded beach island reached by a 10-minute ferry from Tavira town. The Atlantic-facing beaches here are longer and quieter than those around the central resort towns.

A protected natural park behind Faro with flamingos, herons and clear channels between barrier islands. Short boat tours from the old town pier take about 2 hours.
