A 8-day journey from Cambridge through the Fens to Stamford, taking in Gothic cathedrals, a Bronze Age causeway, and England's finest stone town.
Begin in Cambridge, a city of 31 colleges built along the River Cam, and spend two days punting the Backs and exploring the free Fitzwilliam Museum before heading north to Ely. The flat fenland landscape reveals Ely Cathedral from 30 kilometres away, rising like a Gothic ship above the fields. Peterborough follows with its theatrical three-arched West Front and the 3,500-year-old Bronze Age causeway at Flag Fen. The route ends at Stamford, England's first conservation area, with 600 listed limestone buildings and Burghley House on its edge; a day trip to Rutland Water adds birdwatching and cycling to the final days.

The world's most celebrated university city lies along the River Cam, where punts drift past the Gothic spires of King's College. The Fitzwilliam Museum, the Mathematical Bridge, and the Bridge of Sighs are within easy walking distance. Grantchester meadows, 3 km south, offer a pastoral complement to the city's grand architecture.

Parking is scarce in central Cambridge. Use the Park and Ride on the A14 or A1307. Punting hire is at Silver Street Bridge and Magdalene Bridge; book in advance in summer.

Oliver Cromwell's House on the market place is an engaging museum of 17th-century domestic life; Cromwell lived here as a tax collector in the 1630s.

Burghley House opens most days April to October; parking on site is free. Rutland Water is 20 km west for a day trip; bike hire is at Whitwell. Stamford town car park is off St Peter's Hill.

King's College Chapel, Cambridge
The defining image of Cambridge: a 15th-century Gothic chapel with the largest fan-vaulted ceiling in the world, built for Henry VI and completed by Henry VIII. Handel's Messiah received its English premiere here in 1749. The Rubens painting 'The Adoration of the Magi' hangs behind the high altar.

Ely Cathedral Octagonal Lantern Tower
Built in 1322 after the Norman crossing tower collapsed, the octagonal lantern replaced a square tower with an eight-sided timber structure. The engineering solution, spanning 21 metres with no central support, remains unique in medieval cathedral architecture. Guided octagon tours include access to the lantern gallery above.

Flag Fen Bronze Age Causeway, Peterborough
A 3,500-year-old timber causeway extending across the former fenland, discovered in 1982. The Preservation Hall keeps a section of the original timbers wet and protected; the museum displays Bronze Age artefacts including swords, jewellery and tools recovered from the waterlogged site.

Burghley House, Stamford
An Elizabethan prodigy house, built by William Cecil between 1555 and 1587, with 18 state rooms displaying works by Verrocchio, Gainsborough and Jan Steen. The Heaven Room ceiling was painted by Antonio Verrio. The Capability Brown deer park surrounds the house and borders Stamford town.

Peterborough Cathedral West Front
Three great Early English arches of the West Front, built between 1195 and 1230, form one of the most theatrical cathedral facades in England. Katharine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII, is buried in the cathedral's north aisle; her tomb is marked by a royal standard.
