Starting on Liverpool's UNESCO-listed waterfront, this one-way crossing strikes east through some of England's most varied landscapes. Keswick provides a two-night Lake District base for Derwentwater and the Borrowdale fells. A scenic A66 crossing then leads to Barnard Castle in the North Pennines — home to the extraordinary Bowes Museum and the thundering High Force waterfall. Durham Cathedral and the Beamish open-air museum anchor the city stage before the final leg delivers Whitby's atmospheric abbey ruins and the smugglers' cove of Robin Hood's Bay.

Park once near Albert Dock for day one. A Magical Mystery Bus Tour or Anfield Stadium tour fills day two. Mersey ferries depart Pier Head, a 10-minute walk from the dock.

Catbells is the classic walk: take the 8am launch to Hawse End landing and follow the ridge above Derwentwater. Book the launch ahead in summer as it fills quickly.

Whitby's abbey ruins on the East Cliff and the 199 steps are the route's atmospheric finale. Spend one day in Whitby itself and one day following the coast south to Robin Hood's Bay, a smugglers' village tumbling down the cliff to a boulder-strewn shore rich in fossils.

Robin Hood's Bay fills fast in summer: park above the village and walk down. Magpie Cafe fish and chips usually means a queue — arrive before noon or after 2pm.

UNESCO-listed Albert Dock holds five national museums including Tate Liverpool and The Beatles Story, making it England's most visited waterfront complex outside London. The International Slavery Museum is among the most powerful in the country and entry is free.

High Force Waterfall, Upper Teesdale
England's largest waterfall by volume, High Force drops 21 metres over a Whin Sill dolerite ledge deep in the North Pennines. The short walk from the car park near Bowlees takes 10 minutes and is one of the best-value detours in the northeast.
Beach
Robin Hood's Bay
Six miles south of Whitby, this fishing village of smugglers' passages and steeply stacked cottages ends at a rocky shoreline rich in fossils. At low tide the flat rock ledges are accessible for exploration; at high tide the lower village is tight enough to feel entirely its own world.

Derwentwater Lake Cruise
Keswick Launch runs a hop-on hop-off circuit around Derwentwater calling at seven landing stages, including Hawse End (start of the Catbells walk), Friar's Crag and Lodore Falls. The 50-minute loop is the best way to read the Lake District landscape before choosing where to walk.

Durham Cathedral
Widely regarded as the finest Norman cathedral in Europe, Durham Cathedral shares a UNESCO listing with the adjacent castle. Evensong at 5:15pm is free and the acoustic of the Romanesque nave is extraordinary. The Galilee Chapel at the west end holds the tomb of the Venerable Bede.

Honister Pass and Borrowdale Valley
The B5289 south from Keswick through Borrowdale and over the 356-metre Honister Pass to Buttermere is one of England's most rewarding mountain roads. The Honister Rambler bus (No. 77) covers the same loop from Keswick, running daily from March to November.

Beamish Living Museum of the North
Spread across 350 acres of County Durham countryside, Beamish recreates northeast England life across five time periods from the 1820s to the 1950s. Working trams, costumed demonstrators, period shops and a real colliery winding engine make this one of the most immersive museums in Britain.

Built in 1870s County Durham to resemble a French chateau, the Bowes Museum holds works by El Greco, Goya and Canaletto alongside extraordinary decorative arts. The Silver Swan, an 18th-century mechanical automaton, performs at 2pm daily and is one of England's most remarkable museum objects.

Whitby Abbey and the 199 Steps
The jagged ruins of the 13th-century abbey on the East Cliff inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula and remain Whitby's defining landmark. Climb the 199 steps from the harbour for views over the red-roofed old town and the North Sea, then explore the clifftop graveyard that features in Stoker's novel.
