The oldest recorded town in England, Colchester was the first capital of Roman Britain (Camulodunum). The 3km Roman defensive wall still circles much of the old town, and the Castle, built on the Temple of Claudius foundations, holds the largest Norman keep in Europe. Balkerne Gate is the oldest surviving Roman gateway in Britain.

The heart of Constable Country in the Dedham Vale National Landscape. John Constable attended school here and painted his most famous works along the River Stour. Flatford Mill, owned by the Constable family, is where The Hay Wain was painted in 1821. A 3-mile circular walk connects the village to Flatford.

Flatford Mill is free to visit (National Trust, no booking needed). The 3-mile Dedham-Flatford circular walk is signposted from the village car park. Boat hire on the Stour runs April to October.

Finchingfield

Described as the most photographed village in England, Finchingfield combines a duck pond, hump-backed bridge, medieval church and 16th-century Guildhall overlooked by an 18th-century post mill windmill. The Round House cottage was once owned by Dodie Smith, who wrote 101 Dalmatians here.

The loop closes back in Colchester, 40 minutes northeast of Finchingfield via the A131 and A12, through the Blackwater Valley and the north Essex farmland.
The A131 from Finchingfield passes through Braintree; the A12 north then east takes you back to Colchester in under 40 minutes. Good road for a final early morning drive.

Colchester Castle and the Roman Vaults
The largest Norman keep in Europe, built over the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, now houses an interactive museum with the Colchester Gladiator Vase, the Fenwick Hoard of Roman gold and silver, and a descent into the original Roman vaults beneath the Norman stonework. The Roman circus, 450 metres long and seating 8,000 spectators, is the only chariot-racing circuit known in Britain.

Flatford Mill and The Hay Wain Trail
The National Trust-managed Flatford is the most visited site in Constable Country. The mill, bridge cottage and valley are unchanged from the paintings of John Constable, who grew up nearby and used them as subjects throughout his career. The Hay Wain (1821) was painted from the ford at Flatford and is now one of the most recognised British paintings in the world.

Native Colchester Oysters, Mersea Island
The native Colchester oyster has been harvested from the tidal creeks and beds around Mersea Island since Roman times. The Company Shed on West Mersea is an informal seafood shack where fresh oysters, crab and whole dressed lobster are sold directly from the day's catch. It accepts no bookings and no cards; arrive at opening time.

Thames Sailing Barges, Maldon Hythe Quay
The Thames Sailing Barge was the working cargo vessel of the Thames estuary for 300 years. Maldon's Hythe Quay holds the largest active collection anywhere in England: several restored barges are available for charter, and others are moored permanently at the quay. The Maldon Barge Match, the longest-running sailing race in the world, takes place each summer.

Finchingfield Village
A complete set-piece of English village design: duck pond, village green, hump-backed bridge over the mill stream, 15th-century Church of St John the Baptist on the hill, and the post mill windmill above the rooftops. Nothing dominates; everything contributes. Often reproduced on jigsaws and chocolate boxes, it is more satisfying in person.
