- Trains to Varenna leave Milano Centrale; trains to Como leave Centrale and Cadorna. Buy tickets at the station machines before boarding. Fast hydrofoils up the lake are quicker but pricier than the slow scenic ferries. The funicular to Brunate runs late on summer evenings. The fast passenger-ferry triangle linking Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio runs every 20 to 30 minutes in season. A car is neither needed nor wanted here. Varenna's station is a 10-minute walk uphill from the ferry dock. The lakeside Passeggiata is lit and lovely after dark. Buses run from Menaggio over to Lugano in Switzerland in about an hour. Carry a few euros for the lakefront gelaterias. From Milano Centrale, high-speed trains reach Turin, Venice and Florence in under three hours.
