- Fishbourne Roman Palace is 2 km from the city centre, walkable or cycleable along the harbour path. Park in the city centre and explore on foot for the two-night stay. Arundel Castle is closed on Saturdays and from November to March. Check dates before visiting. The grounds and medieval town reward a full morning before checking in. NT members enter Petworth House free. The house is closed November to March. Petworth town has a concentration of antique dealers worth an hour's browse. Book NT parking in advance in summer. The Cowdray ruins are freely accessible during daylight hours. The Spread Eagle inn in the town centre is a good lunch option. South Downs walks from here need sturdy footwear. The Pallant House Gallery is closed on Mondays. Chichester station has direct trains to London Victoria (90 minutes) if you are returning the hire car here.
