- Park at the Wet Dock. The town centre is compact and walkable. Stock up on supplies here before heading into smaller coastal villages. Book Sutton Hoo entry in advance, especially in summer. National Trust members enter free. The tide mill interior opens on selected days. Book the Orford Ness ferry through the National Trust at least two weeks ahead (tickets release Thursdays). Ferry runs May to September only. The fish and chip shops (two on the high street) have lunchtime queues in summer. Eat on the shingle beach. Snape Maltings has a good café and artisan shops. Adnams Brewery tours (£27.50) must be booked ahead and run weekdays only. Wear fully enclosed shoes. Book lighthouse tours through Adnams on 01502 727225. The A12 from Southwold to Ipswich takes around 55 minutes. Saxmundham is a short detour off the A12 if you want a final roadside stop.
