A practical 10-day Arkansas Ozarks road trip itinerary, looping from Little Rock through Hot Springs, the Buffalo National River and Eureka Springs, with driving times and pacing.
Arkansas earns its nickname, the Natural State, in the mountains. This Arkansas Ozarks road trip itinerary loops out of Little Rock and into the Ouachita and Ozark highlands, following Scenic Byway 7 past thermal springs, the first protected river in the country, and some of the South's most reliable autumn colour. It is a scenic, unhurried drive rather than a hard adventure, built around ten relaxed days and realistic driving legs.
The loop starts and finishes in Little Rock. Driven clockwise, it climbs southwest into the Ouachita Mountains at Hot Springs, then turns north up Scenic Byway 7 over Mount Magazine and into the Ozarks. The middle of the trip belongs to the Buffalo National River around Ponca and Jasper, before the route swings northwest to Eureka Springs, east to the folk town of Mountain View, and finally south back to Little Rock. Distances are short, but the roads are winding, so plan for slow average speeds and frequent stops.
This route suits travellers who like mixing easy hikes and scenic drives with small historic towns, live music and good Southern food. The walking is optional and mostly moderate, the towns are welcoming, and any car copes from spring through autumn. It works well for couples, families and first-time visitors to Arkansas.
Ten days is comfortable, with two nights each at Hot Springs, the Buffalo National River and Eureka Springs to avoid a string of one-night stops. With a week, trim a night from each base and skip Mountain View. With more time, add Petit Jean State Park between Hot Springs and Mount Magazine.
Start in the capital on the Arkansas River. Collect your car, walk the River Market district, and rest before the mountain driving begins.
Drive southwest to Hot Springs, a spa town wrapped inside a national park. Soak in a historic bathhouse on Bathhouse Row, climb the Hot Springs Mountain Tower, and walk the wooded trails above town.

Head north on Scenic Byway 7 to Mount Magazine, the highest point in Arkansas. The state park lodge has long views over the river valley, and the bluffs are popular with hikers and hang-gliders.

Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
Base near Ponca and Jasper for the upper Buffalo, America's first national river. Paddle the calm stretches, hike to Hawksbill Crag and Lost Valley, and watch the Boxley Valley elk herd at dawn.

Loop northwest to Eureka Springs, a Victorian spa town built into steep hillsides, with a whole downtown on the National Register. Explore the galleries and inns, ride the trolley, and visit the glass Thorncrown Chapel.
Drive east to Mountain View, the folk-music heart of the Ozarks. Visit the Ozark Folk Center, tour Blanchard Springs Caverns, and catch evening music on the courthouse square.
Run south on quiet highways to close the loop in Little Rock, in time to drop the car or catch a flight.
Scenic Byway 7 is the spine of this loop and one of the most scenic drives in the country, but it is tightly wound through the mountains. Take the curves slowly, especially in rain or fog, and use overlooks rather than stopping on the road. Fuel is the main logistical concern: stations are sparse in the national forest and along the river, so top up in towns such as Clarksville, Jasper and Harrison whenever you pass one.
Spring and autumn are the prime seasons. April and May bring dogwood and redbud blooms and full rivers for paddling, while the fall colour peaks from mid-October into early November. Summer is hot and humid but fine for early starts and swimming holes, and winter is quiet, with the chance of ice on the high byway.
Carry water, snacks and a little cash for small towns and trailheads. Mobile signal drops in the national forest and river canyons, so download offline maps before you set off. River levels on the Buffalo change quickly after rain, so check conditions with the National Park Service before paddling, and book lodges and cabins well ahead on autumn weekends.
