A practical Cape Cod road trip itinerary from Sandwich to Provincetown: where to stop, how to pace nine relaxed days, and the best beaches, seals and whales along the way.
Cape Cod is one of New England's great summer drives: a sandy arm reaching 60 miles into the Atlantic, strung with old whaling towns, lighthouses, oyster shacks and some of the wildest protected beaches on the east coast. This Cape Cod road trip itinerary runs the full length of the peninsula, from the old town of Sandwich at the gateway to the dune-backed tip at Provincetown, over a relaxed nine days.
The Cape has two roads worth knowing. Route 6, the Mid-Cape Highway, is the fast spine that gets you end to end in about ninety minutes. Route 6A, the Old King's Highway, is the slow, scenic bayside alternative through Sandwich and Barnstable. This trip threads both, heading south-west to Falmouth first, then working east and north through Hyannis, Chatham and the Cape Cod National Seashore before finishing in Provincetown.
This is a gentle, experience-led coastal trip rather than an adventure drive. It suits travellers who like beaches, seafood, small museums, easy cycling and harbour towns, and families who want short driving legs between stops. The roads are flat and well paved, so any car copes; the only real challenges are summer traffic and beach parking.
Nine days is unhurried and lets you settle into a few bases rather than packing every night. With a week, drop a night in Sandwich or Falmouth. The whole Cape is small, so resist the urge to move every day; two-night stays in Hyannis, Chatham and Provincetown make the trip feel like a holiday rather than a relay.
Cross the Sagamore Bridge to Sandwich, the oldest town on the Cape. Walk the boardwalk over the salt marsh, visit the Sandwich Glass Museum, and pick up Route 6A for a first taste of the scenic bayside road.
Head to the south-west corner. Cycle the flat Shining Sea Bikeway from Falmouth out to Woods Hole, the oceanographic village and ferry port for Martha's Vineyard, and catch the view from Nobska Lighthouse.
Base two nights in the Mid-Cape hub. Hyannis is the jumping-off point for ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, home to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, and an easy spot for family beaches at Kalmus and Craigville.

Chatham sits on the Cape's elbow and makes the prettiest Lower Cape base. Watch grey seals from the fish pier, climb to Chatham Lighthouse, browse the boutique Main Street, and take a boat to the barrier beaches or Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
The Outer Cape opens into the protected national seashore. Start at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, then walk the wild dunes of Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light. Detour just up the road to Wellfleet for fresh oysters and a handful of galleries.

The drive ends through the rolling Province Lands dunes at Provincetown, the lively, art-filled town on the very tip. Climb the Pilgrim Monument, wander Commercial Street, take a whale-watching boat out to Stellwagen Bank, and spend a last afternoon at Race Point or Herring Cove.
Late spring to early autumn is the season. Whale-watching runs from mid-April to October and peaks from June to September, which is also the warmest, busiest stretch for the beaches. July and August are the liveliest and the priciest, so book accommodation months ahead; September keeps the warm sea and thins the crowds.
This is a self-drive route and any car handles it. The catch in summer is parking: popular national seashore and town beaches close their lots once full, often by mid-morning, so arrive early or use a beach pass and shuttle where offered. From Provincetown you can return to Boston by fast ferry rather than driving the whole Cape back, which makes a tidy one-way trip.
Grey seals along the Lower and Outer Cape draw great white sharks, so swim only at lifeguarded beaches and heed purple flag warnings. The Atlantic-facing beaches have strong surf and cold water even in summer. Book island ferries, whale-watching tours and dinner tables ahead in peak season, when the Cape is at its busiest.
