A practical 8-day Central Oregon road trip itinerary looping from Bend through the Cascade Lakes, Crater Lake, the North Umpqua and Smith Rock.
Central Oregon packs alpine lakes, the deepest lake in the country and moon-like lava fields into one easy loop from a single base. This Central Oregon road trip itinerary runs eight summer days from Bend, south to Crater Lake and back over the high passes, with realistic driving legs and a clear sense of where to linger.
The loop starts and finishes in Bend. You drive the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway south past Mount Bachelor, spend two nights on the rim at Crater Lake, then return via Diamond Lake and the North Umpqua waterfalls, the lava fields of McKenzie Pass, and the climbing canyon at Smith Rock. Distances are short, but the scenery and swim stops mean you should plan unhurried days.
This is a scenic, active drive rather than a hard expedition. It suits travellers who like short hikes, paddling, big volcanic landscapes and a good brewery at the end of the day. Any car copes with the paved byways in summer; confidence on winding mountain roads helps more than horsepower.
This is a summer route by necessity. Crater Lake's Rim Drive clears of snow around July, and McKenzie Pass (Highway 242) stays closed until mid-June. July to September is the reliable window for open passes and warm, dry days.
Start in Central Oregon's outdoor hub. Float the Deschutes through the Old Mill District, ride the Mount Bachelor chairlift, and stock up before heading south.
Drive the 66-mile byway past Mount Bachelor to Sparks Lake, where South Sister reflects in still morning water. Paddle, swim or walk a lakeshore trail before continuing south.

Spend two nights at the centrepiece of the trip. Drive the 33-mile Rim Drive with its 30-plus overlooks, walk a rim trail, and time sunset and sunrise for the deepest blues. The lake fills the caldera of Mount Mazama and reaches 1,949 feet, the deepest in the United States.

Drop west and north to Diamond Lake below the spire of Mount Thielsen. The Highway of Waterfalls (Highway 138) threads past Toketee and 272-foot Watson Falls, both short walks from the road.
Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
Climb seasonal Highway 242 to the Dee Wright Observatory, a 1935 lava-stone tower looking out across black basalt to the Three Sisters. Browse the walkable town of Sisters before an easy run toward Smith Rock.

Finish at the birthplace of American sport climbing. Hike the steep Misery Ridge loop for canyon-rim views of the Crooked River and the Monkey Face spire, then drive the last 30 minutes back to Bend.
Front-load two nights in Bend and two at Crater Lake, and keep the single-night stops light. The drive legs are all under three hours, so most days leave plenty of time for a hike or a swim.
This is a self-drive route on paved roads, suitable for any car in summer. Large RVs and trailers should avoid narrow Highway 242 over McKenzie Pass and use the Santiam Pass alternative. Fuel up in the towns: services are sparse around Crater Lake and on the North Umpqua.
Mountain weather changes fast, so carry layers and water even on warm days. Confirm that McKenzie Pass and the Crater Lake Rim Drive are open before you set out, as both depend on snowmelt. Note that for 2026 to 2028 the Cleetwood Cove Trail to the water and the Crater Lake boat tours are closed, though the Rim Drive remains open.
