A practical 8-day Glacier National Park road trip itinerary: loop from Whitefish over the Going-to-the-Sun Road through St Mary, Many Glacier and Two Medicine.
Glacier National Park packs alpine passes, glacier-fed lakes and grizzly country into one compact corner of northern Montana. This Glacier National Park road trip itinerary turns the park into a relaxed 8-day loop from the gateway town of Whitefish, crossing the Continental Divide on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and circling the wild east side before closing west on Highway 2.
The loop runs counter-clockwise from Whitefish. You enter at West Glacier on the green, forested west side, climb the Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass, and drop to the drier east at St Mary. From there you head north to the cathedral peaks of Many Glacier, south to the quiet Two Medicine valley, then follow Highway 2 along the park's southern boundary back to Whitefish. It is roughly 160 miles of park driving, but the slow, scenic roads and frequent stops mean you should plan unhurried days.
This is a scenic, nature-led drive with the option of serious day hikes. It suits travellers who want big mountain scenery, turquoise lakes and a real chance of seeing bears, mountain goats and bighorn sheep, with walks ranging from flat boardwalks to the strenuous Grinnell Glacier and Highline trails. Any car copes on the paved roads in summer.
Eight days is a comfortable length: two nights on Lake McDonald, a night at St Mary, two nights at Many Glacier and a night at Two Medicine, plus the drive in and out. With less time, focus on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier and skip Two Medicine. With more, add hiking days at Many Glacier or a paddle on Lake McDonald.
Start in the relaxed gateway town of Whitefish. Collect your car, swim or stroll at Whitefish Lake, and stock up on groceries, fuel and bear spray before heading into the park, where shops are small and expensive.
Base two nights near Lake McDonald, the park's largest lake. Paddle or walk its coloured-pebble shoreline, take the flat Trail of the Cedars through old-growth rainforest, and hike to Avalanche Lake. This green, water-filled valley is the launch point for the climb east.
The Going-to-the-Sun Road is the centrepiece of any Glacier National Park road trip itinerary: fifty miles of cliff-hugging tarmac that crests the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Stop at the visitor centre, walk the boardwalk to the Hidden Lake Overlook, and watch for mountain goats among the summer wildflowers. A timed-entry reservation is required to drive this road in peak season.
White chalk cliffs, a Norman conquest battlefield, cobblestoned medieval streets and a seaside city that refuses to be ordinary: this East Sussex road trip itinerary covers it all in seven days.
Descend to St Mary on the east side, where the mountains meet the prairie. Catch sunrise at the Wild Goose Island viewpoint, walk the trail to St Mary and Virginia Falls, and stop at the Jackson Glacier Overlook, the only glacier visible from the road.
Many Glacier is the scenic heart of the park, a ring of jagged peaks around Swiftcurrent Lake and the historic Many Glacier Hotel. Spend two nights here for the boat-assisted Grinnell Glacier hike, the easier Swiftcurrent loops, and dawn reflections on the water. Bears are often spotted on the surrounding slopes.
Drive south to the quieter Two Medicine valley, a favourite of locals. Take the classic boat tour across Two Medicine Lake below Sinopah Mountain, or walk to Running Eagle Falls. Spend the night at East Glacier Park, home to the grand 1913 Glacier Park Lodge.
Close the loop on Highway 2, which traces Glacier's southern edge over Marias Pass and the Continental Divide. Stop at the Goat Lick overlook and the railway-era Izaak Walton Inn before reaching Whitefish, about two hours west.
This is a summer trip. The Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens fully between mid-June and early July, once crews clear the deep snow at Logan Pass, and closes again by mid-October. July and early August bring wildflowers, open trails and the biggest crowds. Late June and September are quieter, with a higher chance of lingering or early snow up high.
Any car can drive this loop on paved roads in summer, but vehicles over 21 feet long are barred from the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. A timed-entry vehicle reservation is required for that road in peak season, so book online well ahead. A free park shuttle runs the Going-to-the-Sun corridor in high summer if you would rather not fight for parking.
This is bear country: carry bear spray, store food properly and keep your distance from all wildlife. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack layers even in July, and start popular hikes early to beat both crowds and afternoon storms. Mobile signal is patchy across the park, so download offline maps before you set off.
