A practical Laurel Highlands road trip itinerary looping from Pittsburgh through Fallingwater, Ohiopyle, the Flight 93 Memorial, Johnstown and Ligonier.
Tucked an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, the Laurel Highlands squeeze waterfalls, a world-famous house and a national memorial into a compact stretch of the Allegheny plateau. This Laurel Highlands road trip itinerary loops out of the Steel City over seven relaxed days, with short drives that leave plenty of time for trails, tours and small-town lunches.
The loop starts and finishes in Pittsburgh. You head south first to Ohiopyle for the Youghiogheny Gorge and two Frank Lloyd Wright houses, then climb onto the plateau to the Flight 93 National Memorial. From there it is a short hop to Johnstown and its inclined plane, then west to the village of Ligonier before the easy run back to the city. No single driving leg runs much over ninety minutes.
This route suits travellers who like to mix the outdoors with culture and history. There are waterfall walks, riverside cycling and optional whitewater at Ohiopyle, balanced by guided house tours, a sobering memorial and a couple of walkable small towns. Any car handles the route, and the pace is gentle enough for families.
Seven days is comfortable: one night in Pittsburgh, two at Ohiopyle, and a night each at Somerset, Johnstown and Ligonier. With less time, base both Ohiopyle nights and cut Johnstown. With more, add a day for hiking the Laurel Highlands trails or paddling the Yough.

Start where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio. Ride the Duquesne Incline for the skyline view, browse the Strip District for breakfast and coffee, then pick up your car ready to drive south in the morning.
Base two nights around Ohiopyle, the outdoor heart of the trip. Ohiopyle State Park spreads across more than 20,000 acres of the Youghiogheny Gorge, with the wide ledges of Ohiopyle Falls, the woodland plunge of Cucumber Falls, and the Great Allegheny Passage cycle trail running right through town. Give one day to the marquee draw: Fallingwater, the house Frank Lloyd Wright cantilevered straight over a waterfall, about eight minutes away. His quieter Kentuck Knob sits a short drive further on. Book both tours well ahead, because timed tickets sell out in autumn.
Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
Climb onto the plateau to the Flight 93 National Memorial, which honours the passengers and crew of September 11, 2001. Walk the quiet path to the crash site and the boulder that marks it, then listen to the wind move through the Tower of Voices. Stay the night in nearby Somerset, a practical base among the farm roads and ski hills.
Drop north to Johnstown, a steep city pressed into a river valley. Ride the Johnstown Inclined Plane, billed as the world's steepest vehicular funicular, for the view from Yoder Hill, then visit the Flood Museum to understand the 1889 disaster that defines the town's story.
Finish in Ligonier, built around a green village square known as the Diamond. Browse the independent shops, then tour reconstructed Fort Ligonier, a richly detailed French and Indian War site with cannons, costumed interpreters and a strong museum.
Make the easy hour west to close the loop. Return the car for a last evening in the city, or drive straight to the airport for onward travel.
Autumn is the headline season. Colour starts in the higher forests in late September and peaks across the region in mid-October, when the scenic byways and Ohiopyle overlooks are at their best. Late spring and summer are quieter and greener, and better for rafting, paddling and cycling. Winter narrows the options, as some attractions and Fallingwater's main tour season wind down, so plan a warm-weather or autumn trip.
This is a straightforward self-drive route that any car can manage. Roads are good, but mobile signal drops in the gorges and on the plateau, so carry offline maps. Fuel is sparse around Ohiopyle State Park, so top up in a town before you head in, and watch for cyclists where the Great Allegheny Passage crosses the roads.
Waterfall rocks at Ohiopyle are slippery, and swimming is limited to marked areas like the Meadow Run natural waterslides, so follow the posted signs. Mountain weather changes quickly in autumn, with cold mornings and the chance of fog on the ridges. Allow extra time for the Friday and Sunday drives near Pittsburgh, when US-30 and the Turnpike get busy.
