A practical 10-day Maui road trip itinerary: loop from Kahului through West Maui beaches, the sunny south, sunrise on Haleakalā and the full Road to Hāna, with drive times and where to stay each night.
Maui feels like several islands in one. In ten days you can swim off golden West Maui beaches, snorkel a sunken crater in the south, stand above the clouds on a 10,000-foot volcano, and end on the rainforest coast at the far end of the Hāna Highway. This Maui road trip itinerary links all four in a clockwise loop from Kahului, with short drives and time to stop often.
The loop begins and ends at Kahului, the central airport town, so you can pick up and drop off the rental in the same place. From there it runs out to Kāʻanapali in the west, down to Wailea and the south coast, up to Kula and the Haleakalā summit, across to the Pāʻia north shore, and along the Road to Hāna to the wild east before circling back. Apart from the slow, scenic drive to Hāna, no single leg is long, so the days are shaped by what you stop for rather than how far you go.
This is a varied, experience-led drive rather than a hard adventure. It suits travellers who want beaches, snorkelling, a big volcano and a real sense of place, and who are happy to change base every couple of nights. Any rental car handles the whole loop. A few experiences, such as the Haleakalā sunrise and the Road to Hāna, reward an early start, so it helps to be a morning person at least some days.
Ten days is comfortable, with two-night bases in West Maui, South Maui and Hāna, and single nights in Kahului, Upcountry and Pāʻia. With a week, drop the Kahului and Pāʻia nights and start the Hāna drive straight from the south. With more time, add a day for a Molokini and turtle snorkel or a West Maui boat trip.
Lahaina town was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire. Maui has reopened to visitors, but parts of historic Lahaina remain closed as the community rebuilds. This itinerary bases West Maui at neighbouring Kāʻanapali, which is open and unaffected, and asks travellers to visit with care and respect, support local businesses, and stay clear of the burn area.
Land, collect the car and ease in on the central plain. Drive up to ʻĪao Valley State Monument to see the green ʻĪao Needle spire in the rainforest, wander old Wailuku, and stock up at the island's biggest supermarkets before prices climb elsewhere.
Move to the sunny west coast for two nights on one of Maui's best beaches.

Snorkel the reef at Black Rock, take a whale-watch or snorkel boat in season, and drive north to Kapalua and Honolua Bay. End the day with the torch-lighting and cliff dive at Puʻu Kekaʻa.
White chalk cliffs, a Norman conquest battlefield, cobblestoned medieval streets and a seaside city that refuses to be ordinary: this East Sussex road trip itinerary covers it all in seven days.
Drop down to the dry south coast, where calm beaches run from Kīhei through Wailea to Mākena.

This is the island's best stretch for swimming and snorkelling. Take an early boat to Molokini Crater, walk the Wailea coastal path at sunset, and eat well in Kīhei, which is more relaxed and better value than the resorts.
Climb into cool upcountry farm country and base a night near Kula. Before dawn, drive to the 10,023-foot summit of Haleakalā for sunrise above the clouds, the island's signature experience.

Sunrise needs an advance National Park Service reservation, and the summit can be near freezing even in summer, so pack warm layers. Spend the rest of the day at lavender and protea farms, a small winery and the paniolo town of Makawao.
Drop to the north shore and the bohemian surf town of Pāʻia, the last real services before Hāna. Watch windsurfers and big-wave surfers at Hoʻokipa Beach Park, look for green turtles on the sand, and browse the cafés and boutiques. Fill the tank here.
Give the famous Hāna Highway the time it deserves, with two nights in Hāna so you are not rushing back the same day.
The road runs 64 miles past waterfalls, rainforest and 59 one-lane bridges. Stop at Twin Falls, the Keʻanae peninsula and the black sand beach and sea caves of Waiʻānapanapa, which needs a timed reservation. On the second day, drive south to the Kīpahulu district of Haleakalā National Park for the Pipiwai Trail, which climbs through a giant bamboo forest to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls.
Return along the Hāna Highway to close the loop. Allow a half day for the winding drive, leave time to refuel before the airport, and add a final beach at Kanahā if your flight is late.
Maui is a year-round destination, but April to May and September to October bring the best balance of weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. Humpback whales pass close offshore from December to April, peaking from January to March, which is prime time for a West or South Maui boat trip. Summer is busiest, especially on the Road to Hāna.
You need your own car for this trip, and a standard two-wheel-drive rental is fine for the entire loop. Book it for the airport, where the major agencies are based. Fuel is easy to find in Kahului, Kīhei, Lahaina and Pāʻia, but there is none between Pāʻia and Hāna, so top up before the drive east. Parking at the popular beaches and trailheads fills early.
The Road to Hāna is slow and narrow, with blind corners and one-lane bridges; drive patiently, yield to oncoming traffic on the bridges and let faster local drivers pass. Reserve Haleakalā sunrise and Waiʻānapanapa entry well ahead, as neither sells same-day slots. Check ocean conditions before swimming, since many beaches have strong currents and no lifeguards, and use reef-safe sunscreen, which is required by law in Hawaiʻi.
