A practical 9-day Oahu road trip itinerary that circles the island from Waikiki, taking in the windward beaches, the North Shore surf coast and the Ko Olina lagoons.
Oʻahu is far more than Waikiki. This Oahu road trip itinerary circles the whole island counter-clockwise from Honolulu in nine relaxed days, linking the south-shore sights, the windward beaches, the North Shore surf coast and the leeward lagoons. Distances are short, so you spend your time on the sand and the trails rather than behind the wheel.
The loop runs Honolulu to Kailua, up the windward coast through Kualoa and Lāʻie, around the tip to the North Shore, then down the leeward side to Ko Olina before returning to Honolulu. It is roughly 180 miles in total and easily paced over a week and a half, with four overnight bases so you are not packing and unpacking every day.
This is a relaxed, beach-led drive with optional hikes and snorkelling, rather than a hard adventure. It suits first-time visitors who want the island's marquee sights, families who want safe swimming, and anyone who would rather settle into a few bases than chase a new hotel each night. Any rental car is fine; you will not need four-wheel drive.
Start where the loop will end. Give Pearl Harbor a half-day, climb Diamond Head early for the classic crater-and-coast view, and leave time for Waikiki's gentle surf and the museums and palaces of downtown Honolulu.
Cross the Koʻolau range to the windward side and the island's best swimming beaches. Lanikai and Kailua have soft sand and calm water, while the drive in along the southeast coast takes in Hanauma Bay, the Halona Blowhole and the Makapuʻu lighthouse trail.
Follow the coast north past Kāneʻohe Bay and the serene Byodo-In Temple. Kualoa Ranch runs ATV, horseback and film-location tours beneath the ridges that doubled for Jurassic Park, and an evening at the Polynesian Cultural Center near Lāʻie rounds off the day.
Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
The surf coast is the trip's second hub. In winter, watch huge sets at Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline; in summer those same bays calm down for snorkelling. Browse Haleʻiwa town, find the green sea turtles at Laniakea, and walk up to the waterfall in Waimea Valley.
Round the dry, sunny leeward side to wind down at Ko Olina, where four sheltered lagoons are made for easy swimming and sunset. Keen walkers can hike out toward Kaʻena Point, the island's wild western tip.
Close the loop through central Oʻahu, leaving time for anything the first two days missed before you fly home.
Oʻahu is a year-round destination. Winter (roughly December to March) brings the famous North Shore swells and the best chance of seeing humpback whales offshore, but also bigger, more dangerous surf. Summer turns the North Shore and leeward bays calm and clear, which is better for swimming and snorkelling. The leeward and south shores are drier and sunnier than the windward side at any time of year.
This is a self-drive loop. Fill up before leaving Honolulu, as fuel stations thin out on the North Shore. Parking is the main daily challenge: lots at Lanikai, Hanauma Bay and the Ko Olina lagoons fill early, so start your mornings sooner than you think. Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and several attractions (Kualoa Ranch, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona) need booking ahead.
Respect the ocean. Winter surf on the North Shore is for experts only; swim where lifeguards fly safe flags and never turn your back on big waves. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by law in Hawaii. Leave nothing valuable in a parked car at trailheads and beaches, and give nesting seabirds and basking turtles a wide, respectful berth.
