A practical 7-day San Juan Skyway road trip itinerary through Colorado's San Juan Mountains: where to stop, how long each leg takes, and how to pace the loop from Durango.
Colorado's San Juan Skyway is one of the great American mountain drives: a 236-mile loop through the highest, most rugged country in the state, designated an All-American Road for good reason. This San Juan Skyway road trip itinerary breaks the loop into a relaxed seven days, with realistic driving legs and a clear sense of where to linger and where to keep moving.
The Skyway starts and finishes in Durango. Driven clockwise, it climbs north over Coal Bank and Molas passes to Silverton, crosses the famous Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, runs west over Dallas Divide to Telluride, then drops south over Lizard Head Pass to Mesa Verde before an easy run back to Durango. Five high passes, two of them above 10,900 feet, link a chain of 1880s mining towns and one of the finest archaeological sites in North America.
This is a scenic, experience-led drive with plenty of optional adventure: hot springs, alpine hikes, Jeep trails and steam trains. It suits travellers who enjoy mountain towns, big landscapes and a bit of history, and who are comfortable on high passes. Any car copes in summer; confidence with heights matters more than horsepower on the cliffside curves of Red Mountain Pass.
Seven days is the sweet spot: enough to ride the railroad, tour a cliff dwelling and slow down in Telluride without marathon driving days. The bare loop can be driven in a long day, but that wastes the point of it. With less time, cut a night from Telluride; with more, add a day for Jeep trails above Ouray.
Start in Durango, the route's biggest hub. Ride the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, walk the historic Main Avenue, and soak at Trimble hot springs before the high passes begin.
Climb north over Coal Bank and Molas passes to Silverton, a perfectly preserved mining town at 9,318 feet. Tour the Old Hundred Gold Mine and overnight before the Million Dollar Highway.

The drive from Silverton to Ouray is the Million Dollar Highway, the most famous and most demanding stretch of the Skyway, over Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet. In Ouray, the Switzerland of America, walk to Box Canyon Falls and soak in the town hot springs pool.
Eight days through the finest UNESCO towns of Bohemia and Moravia: Prague's Astronomical Clock, the bone church of Kutná Hora, Telč's Renaissance square, the fairy-tale castle bend of Český Krumlov and Pilsner Urquell in Plzeň.
Cross Dallas Divide to Telluride, a former mining camp at the head of a box canyon. Ride the free gondola to Mountain Village, hike toward 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls, and use two nights to enjoy a festival or a slow day at altitude.
Drop south over Lizard Head Pass to Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a ranger-led tour into a cliff dwelling such as Cliff Palace. Then take the easy US-160 run east back to Durango to close the loop.
Front-load the mountains. Give Telluride two nights and treat Silverton and Ouray as shorter stops linked by the best driving on the route. Leave Mesa Verde for a single focused day, as the cliff-dwelling tours and Mesa Top Loop fill it easily.
Late May to October is the window: the high passes are open and the weather is settled. Summer is warm and sunny at altitude. For the best colour, aim for late September, when the aspens turn whole hillsides gold for about three weeks. Avoid winter unless you are fully prepared for snow and chains, as Red Mountain Pass can close in storms.
The Skyway is a self-drive route and any car handles it in summer. The Million Dollar Highway is the one stretch to respect: drive it in daylight and dry conditions, watch for slow traffic and cyclists, and do not rush the curves. Fuel is easy in the towns but fill up before long pass sections.
Altitude is real here: Silverton sits above 9,000 feet, so take it easy on day one and drink plenty of water. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so start passes and hikes early. Book the narrow gauge railroad and Mesa Verde tours in advance, as both sell out in peak season.
