A practical 8-day Texas Hill Country road trip itinerary from San Antonio: where to stop, drive times, and how to pace the loop through wine country and Austin.
The Texas Hill Country is the most relaxed of America's classic drives. Limestone hills, spring-fed swimming holes, German wine towns and working cattle ranches all sit within an hour or two of San Antonio and Austin, which makes for a loop you can take slowly and still see plenty. This Texas Hill Country road trip itinerary breaks the region into a comfortable eight days, with short driving legs and a clear sense of where to linger.
The loop starts and finishes in San Antonio and runs clockwise. From the River Walk you head west to Bandera, north to Fredericksburg and the wineries, east to Austin, then south to Wimberley before the easy run back to San Antonio. No single leg is much over an hour, so the driving never dominates the day.
This is a gentle, food-and-scenery trip rather than a big-mileage adventure. It suits travellers who like small towns, wine and barbecue, easy walks and a swim at the end of a warm day. Families do well here, and any car handles the whole loop. The one optional bit of exertion is the granite dome at Enchanted Rock, a short steep climb you can skip.
Eight days is comfortable: two nights each in San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Austin, with single nights in Bandera and Wimberley. With only five days, drop a night in San Antonio and Austin and keep moving. With more time, add a day for the wineries or a float trip on a Hill Country river.
Start in San Antonio, the loop's biggest city. Walk the River Walk, visit the Alamo, and drive or cycle the south-side trail linking the four Spanish colonial missions, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the easiest place to pick up a hire car and stock up before the smaller towns.
Head west to Bandera, the self-styled Cowboy Capital of the World. Book a trail ride at a dude ranch, swim in the Medina River, and end the night in a honky-tonk. One night is enough to feel the working-ranch character before the wine country.

Drive north to Fredericksburg, the German-founded centre of Texas wine country. Spend two nights touring the US-290 tasting rooms, climbing the pink granite dome at Enchanted Rock, and, in spring, chasing bluebonnets on the Willow City Loop. The Main Street biergartens and bakeries are a highlight in themselves.
White chalk cliffs, a Norman conquest battlefield, cobblestoned medieval streets and a seaside city that refuses to be ordinary: this East Sussex road trip itinerary covers it all in seven days.

It is a short run east to Austin, the state capital and live-music city. Swim the cold, spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, work through the barbecue and taco scene, and watch the bats stream from the Congress Avenue bridge at dusk. Two nights balances downtown nightlife with time on the lake and greenbelt.

Drop south to Wimberley, a small arts town among cypress creeks. Cool off at Blue Hole Regional Park or the artesian Jacob's Well, browse the galleries on the square, then take the easy hour back to San Antonio to close the loop.
Spring is the prize season. From late March to mid-April the bluebonnets peak, the weather is mild and the swimming holes are not yet crowded. Autumn is a quieter second-best, with cooler days and golden light. Summer is hot, often above 35C, so save it for early starts and plenty of river time. Winter is calm and cheap, though some attractions keep shorter hours.
This is an easy self-drive loop on good paved roads, suitable for any car. Distances are short, fuel is plentiful in the towns, and parking is simple everywhere except central Austin, where it pays to use a garage and walk. Reserve an Enchanted Rock day pass and a Jacob's Well summer swim slot well ahead, as both cap numbers and sell out.
The main hazard here is heat. In summer, carry water, start hikes and drives early, and never leave anyone or a pet in a parked car. Spring brings the wildflowers but also the occasional flash flood, so check the forecast before low-water creek crossings. Stay on public land when photographing bluebonnets, and watch for deer on Hill Country roads at dawn and dusk.
