- Leave I-87 (the Northway) at Exit 21. Book a Lake George steamboat cruise ahead in July and August, when the village is at its busiest. Drive Route 73 in through Keene Valley and the Cascade Lakes for the finest approach. The Whiteface toll road is seasonal, so check it is open. Rent a canoe or kayak for the Saranac Lakes. Many shops and cafes close early midweek outside summer, so plan dinner ahead. Allow at least half a day for the Wild Center. Check Sky Center observatory open nights in advance, as they are scheduled rather than nightly. The Adirondack Experience is seasonal, roughly late May to mid-October. Fuel and services are limited here, so top up at Long Lake. Hike Bald (Rondaxe) Mountain for the classic Fulton Chain view; it is short but rocky. Route 28 east to Lake George takes about two and a half hours. Route 28 to Warrensburg then I-87 south is the quickest way back. Break the drive at Indian Lake or Speculator.
