- Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL) receives direct flights from London. Rent your car at the terminal. City centre parking is paid but easy to find within five minutes of the harbour. Vista do Rei is 12 km from the village at the crater rim. Arrive before 9 am to avoid tour groups. Overnight accommodation in the village is limited; book ahead in summer. Gorreana is open daily; entry is free. The factory shop sells tea to take home. Santa Bárbara beach has strong Atlantic surf; check local conditions before swimming. Order the cozido stew from a Furnas restaurant the evening before; pots are collected at the caldeiras the next morning. Parque Terra Nostra charges entry for the thermal pool. The northeast coast road is narrow and winding. Drive slowly and use every signed miradouro freely; nearly all are worth stopping at. Lagoa do Fogo is signed off the EN1-1A road; allow 30 minutes for the viewpoint walk. PDL airport is 3 km west of the city centre. Return the hire car well before departure.
