- Book the manta ray night snorkel ahead. Buy Kona coffee direct from a farm around Holualoa or Captain Cook. Do not touch or crowd the turtles at Punaluʻu; stay well back. Papakōlea needs a 4WD or a 4 mile round-trip walk. Park entry is valid for seven days. Check the NPS site for current eruption status and air quality (vog) before you go. Mauna Kea's visitor station (9,200 ft) is fine in a normal car; the summit road beyond needs 4WD. Dress warm. The Waipiʻo Valley floor road is closed to visitors; the rim lookout is open and free. Guided shuttle tours run to the valley. Waimea has a wet east end and a dry west end, often minutes apart. Pack a layer; evenings up here are cool. Kona airport (KOA) is about 15 minutes north of town. Allow time to refuel the rental before drop-off.
