- Fly into Puerto Montt El Tepual Airport (PMC), 20 km south. Pick up your hire car at the airport before the short drive north to Puerto Varas. Turn off Ruta 5 at the Frutillar Bajo sign to reach the pier and lakefront. Frutillar Alto, up the hill, is the commercial centre but has no lake views. Aguas Calientes closes earlier in low season (around 17:00). Visit in the morning if day-tripping, or book into Termas de Puyehue resort for a full evening in the pools. Book the Villarrica summit hike at least two days ahead in peak season. Weather cancellations are common; reputable operators will rebook within your stay at no extra charge. Feria Pinto is busiest Tuesday to Saturday mornings. Park on the surrounding streets and walk in; parking inside the market blocks is chaotic. Allow 3 hours from Temuco to the airport, including the 20 km drive from Puerto Varas to Puerto Montt and check-in time.
