Clifton Suspension Bridge
Brunel's 1864 masterpiece spans 214 metres across the Avon Gorge, 75 metres above the river. The bridge is free to walk across; the visitor centre explains the engineering story. Walk from the Clifton side to the Leigh Woods viewpoint for the best perspective over the gorge.

Vindolanda Fort and Museum
Ongoing excavations at Vindolanda regularly unearth Roman artefacts. The Vindolanda Tablets, wooden writing tablets dating to around 100 AD, are the oldest handwritten documents found in Britain. The on-site museum is outstanding, and the excavation season lets visitors watch archaeologists at work.

Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site
The world's first iron bridge (1779) stands in one of 10 museums spread across the gorge. Blists Hill Victorian Town is the most immersive, with costumed interpreters and working trades. Buy a passport ticket covering all museums and allow a full day to do the gorge justice.
Scenic Drive
Swaledale Drive via Muker and Keld
The B6270 from Richmond up Swaledale to Keld is one of the finest valley drives in northern England. Pass through Reeth, Muker (wildflower meadows in early summer) and Keld at the dale's head, where four waterfalls are within 30 minutes on foot. Allow a full day return from Richmond.

Chester's two-mile Roman wall circuit is the most complete in Britain and walkable in 90 minutes. The Rows below are equally unique: two-level medieval galleries built into Roman foundations, lining the city's four main streets since the 1200s. Together they make Chester the most layered historic city in England.

Hexham Abbey and Saxon Crypt
Hexham Abbey was founded in 674 AD; the crypt beneath it is one of the oldest surviving crypts in northern Europe, built from dressed Roman stone taken from Corbridge garrison town. The guided crypt tour identifies Roman inscriptions still visible in the stonework.
Viewpoint
Housesteads Roman Fort
The most complete Roman fort in Britain, set high on the escarpment with long views along the Wall in both directions. Remains include a hospital, granaries, barracks and latrines. Reached in 20 minutes from Hexham by car or via the AD122 seasonal bus.

Brunel's SS Great Britain
Launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain was the world's first ocean-going iron steamship. Dry-docked in Bristol's Great Western Dockyard and fully restored to 1843 condition, with costumed interpreters on the lower decks. Allow two hours for the full experience.
