- Check Caerlaverock Castle opening hours in advance (Historic Environment Scotland site). Burns House Museum is free and covers the town's Burns heritage well. Book Threave Castle visits in advance as the boat trip is popular. Kirroughtree Visitor Centre (30 min north) is the main Galloway Forest dark sky gateway and has ranger-led events. Download the Galloway Dark Sky Park star map from Forestry and Land Scotland before arriving. The A712 to New Galloway through the forest is one of southern Scotland's finest scenic drives. Parking is limited on the harbour front. Use the clifftop car park and walk down. The Southern Upland Way path south to Dunskey Castle ruins takes about 45 minutes on foot. Both Broughton House (NTS) and the Kirkcudbright Galleries have seasonal opening hours; check before arriving. Maclellan's Castle in the town centre is also worth a look.
