- Buy groceries and fill the tank here. Towns south of Anchorage are small and both choice and prices get harder the further you go. Watch the Turnagain Arm bore tide from the highway pullouts. Never walk out on the mudflats: the glacial silt can trap people fast. Book the Kenai Fjords boat cruise ahead for July. Bring warm, waterproof layers: the bay stays cold and wet even at the height of summer. Salmon runs peak in summer and a guided drift trip is the easiest way to fish. Book lodges early: beds in Cooper Landing are limited. Time a water taxi to Halibut Cove or Kachemak Bay State Park around the tides. The Salty Dawg Saloon on the Spit is the classic finish. The Homer to Anchorage drive is about four and a half hours. Leave early and allow for summer roadworks and slow RV traffic on the highway.
