- Book a riad in the medina for your first nights. Withdraw dirhams here; ATMs become sparse east of Ouarzazate. Keep bags close in the souks. Arrive late afternoon to avoid coach tour groups and for the best amber light on the kasbahs. Cross the river ford or stepping stones to enter the ksar. Fuel up fully before leaving Ouarzazate; petrol stations are sparse east of town. Atlas Film Studios entry costs around 60 MAD and is worth the detour. Drive 4 km beyond the main village into the upper gorge for the best rock formations. Roads are paved but narrow; take care on blind hairpins. Walk into the gorge early morning before tour groups arrive. Pack a light layer as the canyon stays cool even in summer. Book a desert camp well in advance for March-April and October-November. Bring a head torch and warm layer for cold desert nights. Fill up with fuel in Midelt before the final 320 km to Marrakech. The town has a roadside fossil market on the main square if you want souvenirs. Leave Midelt early to avoid mountain traffic and arrive in Marrakech in time for a final evening meal in the medina.
