Built in 1846 entirely from cast iron, brick, and stone, it was the first non-combustible dock warehouse complex in Britain and one of the finest examples of Victorian commercial architecture in England.

One of the best free industrial museums in England.

The largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, built from 1220 to 1472. The Great East Window of 1405 is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in a single window anywhere in the world. The 4.8 km circuit of medieval limestone city walls surrounding York is free to walk and gives the finest overview of the city before going inside the cathedral.

A pedestrianised medieval street in the heart of York, where overhanging timber-framed upper storeys of the former butchers' shops almost touch across the street. Preserved since the 14th century, it is one of the best-surviving examples of a medieval commercial street in Europe. At its best early in the morning or at dusk, before the tour groups arrive.

The Angel of the North, Gateshead
Antony Gormley's 20-metre steel figure with a 54-metre wingspan stands on a hilltop south of Gateshead, visible for kilometres on approach via the A1. Built in 1998 from 200 tonnes of weathering steel, it was one of the largest public art commissions of its scale in Britain at the time and is now one of the country's most recognised artworks. Free, 24 hours a day.

Seven bridges cross the Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead. The 1928 Tyne Bridge, engineered by Dorman Long alongside Sydney Harbour Bridge, is the most famous. The 2001 Gateshead Millennium Bridge tilts on its axis to let tall ships pass. The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art on the Gateshead bank is free and has the best elevated views of the river and bridges.
