A 700-year-old UNESCO mine 10 km from Kraków descends 135m through sculpted chambers and underground lakes. The centrepiece is St Kinga's Chapel, carved entirely from salt. Book tickets in advance — it sells out in summer.

Built on the site of the Gdańsk Shipyard where Solidarity began in 1980, this is one of Europe's finest modern history museums, with original artefacts and an immersive layout. Closed Mondays.

Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław is one of Poland's most atmospheric evening walks. When gas lighters make their rounds at dusk, the island's Gothic churches and cobbled lanes take on a genuinely medieval quality.
