An 8-day loop from Ljubljana through the Julian Alps, the emerald Soča Valley, and the Venetian harbour town of Piran on the Adriatic.
Slovenia packs an unlikely amount of scenery into a small country. This 8-day loop leaves Ljubljana heading north into the Julian Alps, where Lake Bled and the Vintgar Gorge set a high bar early. From there the route crosses into Triglav National Park and drops down to the Soča Valley, one of Europe's most dramatic river corridors: the water here is a vivid mineral green, and the surrounding mountains give plenty of scope for walking, rafting and cycling. The final leg swings south to Piran, a car-free town of Venetian lanes and a compact working harbour on the Adriatic. Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cave in a 123-metre cliff, is a short stop on the drive back to Ljubljana. Roads are good throughout, the country requires a motorway vignette for highway driving, and the total distance is modest enough to keep driving days well under 2.5 hours.

The island church in the middle of the lake, with the Karavanke mountains behind it, is Slovenia at its most iconic. Two nights lets you walk the Vintgar Gorge (1.6km boardwalk above the Radovna river) and take the pletna boat to the island. Day-trip to Lake Bohinj for a quieter, more natural version of the same scenery.

Arrive at Vintgar Gorge before 9am to beat the tour groups. The gorge is 4km from town; it is a pleasant walk or a short drive. Bled Castle is uphill but worth the climb for the views.

Book rafting in advance from June to August. The Vršič Pass route from Bled (50 hairpin bends, seasonal) is spectacular but adds 30 minutes. The direct Tolmin road is easier.

Park in the main car park at the town entrance (around €1.50/hr). Driving into the old town is only possible with a hotel permit. Walk in from the car park — it takes under 10 minutes.

Allow 1.5 hours for Predjama alone. Book Postojna Cave tickets online in advance to avoid the long queue at the entrance. Combined tickets for both sites are available.
Return to Ljubljana to close the loop. The city centre is 45 minutes from Predjama Castle and has good rail and flight connections for onward travel.

Vintgar Gorge
A 1.6km wooden boardwalk winds through a narrow canyon carved by the Radovna river, 4km from Bled. The walk ends at a 16-metre waterfall. Go early to beat the crowds.

Lake Bohinj Day Trip
Thirty minutes south of Bled, Lake Bohinj is larger, quieter and sits deeper in Triglav National Park. Good for swimming, kayaking and the Vogel cable car for alpine views at 1,922m.

The bell tower of St George's Cathedral in Piran gives a 360-degree view across the Adriatic and back along the Istrian coast. One of the best viewpoints on the Slovenian coast.

The road through the Soča Valley from Tolmin to Bovec passes emerald pools, gorges and forested peaks. One of Slovenia's great scenic drives, especially in the lower valley near Kobarid.

Kobarid WWI Museum
Named European Museum of the Year in 1994, this small museum in Kobarid documents the Soča Front of 1915-17, where over 300,000 soldiers died. Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms begins here.

White-water rafting on the Soča is the signature activity in Bovec. The river's mineral-green colour makes it unlike any other rafting run in Europe. Suitable for beginners from May to October.
