A practical 7-day Cascade Loop road trip itinerary around Washington's Cascade Range: where to stop, how long each leg takes, and how to pace the loop.
Washington State's Cascade Loop is one of the great American road trips: a 440-mile scenic byway that circles from Puget Sound, over the high Cascades, into sun-baked lake country and back to saltwater. This Cascade Loop road trip itinerary breaks the byway into a relaxed seven days, with realistic driving legs and a clear sense of where to linger and where to keep moving.
The loop starts and finishes at Everett, just north of Seattle. Driven counter-clockwise, it heads east on US 2 over Stevens Pass to Leavenworth, drops to Lake Chelan, then runs up the Methow Valley to Winthrop. From there Highway 20 crosses Rainy and Washington Passes through the North Cascades before winding down to Whidbey Island and a ferry back to the mainland. The counter-clockwise direction is the one the byway recommends, because it puts the best North Cascades viewpoints on the right-hand side of the road.
This is a varied, scenery-first drive rather than a hard adventure. It suits travellers who like mixing alpine forest, mountain passes, lake swimming and small-town stops, with optional hiking and cycling along the way. Any car copes in summer, and the driving days are short, so it works well for families and first-time road trippers.
Seven days is the sweet spot: enough to enjoy Leavenworth and Lake Chelan properly without rushing the mountain sections. With only four or five days you can still drive the full loop, but you will spend more of each day behind the wheel. With more time, add nights in the Methow Valley or on Whidbey Island.
Start at the Puget Sound gateway. Collect your car, stock up, and rest before the driving begins. Heading out on US 2 the next morning keeps the long mountain leg fresh.

Climb US 2 over Stevens Pass to this Bavarian-themed alpine village, the most popular overnight on the loop. Spend two nights: riverside trails, Waterfront Park, German bakeries and beer halls, and a festival if your dates line up.
Drop east into dry, sunny country and the 55-mile glacial Lake Chelan. One night is enough to swim, rent a boat, or taste local wine before heading north up the valley.
White chalk cliffs, a Norman conquest battlefield, cobblestoned medieval streets and a seaside city that refuses to be ordinary: this East Sussex road trip itinerary covers it all in seven days.
Follow the Columbia and the Methow Valley to Winthrop, an 1890s Old-West town with wooden boardwalks. Browse the main street, then ride or walk part of the valley's excellent trail network before the climb over the passes.
Highway 20 crosses Rainy and Washington Passes into the wild heart of the North Cascades. The turquoise Diablo Lake Overlook is the headline view, with short trails at Newhalem and Ross Lake nearby. Base around Marblemount or Newhalem.

Descend through the Skagit Valley to Whidbey Island, crossing the dramatic Deception Pass Bridge. Visit historic Coupeville on Penn Cove, then take the Clinton to Mukilteo ferry back toward Everett to close the loop.
Give Leavenworth and Lake Chelan the most time, since they reward slowing down. Keep the mountain days lighter on activities so you can stop often for views. The final ferry day is short, which leaves room for the Skagit Valley and Deception Pass.
The full Cascade Loop only links up when Highway 20 over the passes is clear of snow, which usually means June to October. July and August are warmest and busiest, so book accommodation in Leavenworth and Lake Chelan months ahead. September brings quieter towns, warm lake water and early autumn colour in the Methow Valley.
This is a self-drive route, and any car handles it in summer. The one fixed link is the Clinton to Mukilteo ferry on the final leg, which can queue at peak times, so build in a buffer. Fuel and services thin out between Winthrop and Marblemount over the passes, so top up before you climb SR 20.
Mountain passes can see sudden weather even in summer, so carry layers and check road conditions before high sections. Wildfire smoke occasionally affects the eastern valleys in late summer; have a flexible plan if air quality drops. Mobile signal is patchy in the North Cascades, so download offline maps before you set off.
