- Drive the loop counter-clockwise (US 2 east first) so the best North Cascades views fall on your side of the road. Parking fills by mid-morning in summer. Stay within walking distance of Front Street or use the seasonal shuttle. The south shore around Chelan town has the swimming beaches and wineries. Book lakefront rooms well ahead in July and August. Fuel up here before SR 20 west. Services are very limited until Marblemount on the far side of the passes. SR 20 over the passes closes in winter, usually opening between mid-April and early May. Confirm it is open before you go. The Clinton to Mukilteo ferry can queue in summer. Arrive early or sail outside peak hours. Penn Cove mussels are the local dish. Seattle-Tacoma airport is about 50 minutes south. Allow extra time for traffic on I-5.
