A practical, car-free Lake Como itinerary by train and ferry, with how to reach Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio from Milan, where to base yourself, and how to pace seven relaxed days.
Lake Como is one of the easiest corners of Italy to enjoy without a car. A fast train from Milan reaches the water in under an hour, and from there the lake's historic ferries link its prettiest villages in minutes. This Lake Como without a car itinerary turns the train and the boat into your whole transport plan, looping from Milan through Como and the famous Centro Lago triangle of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio over seven relaxed days.
The lake's best villages are made for walking, and parking is scarce and expensive in all of them. Public ferries run by Navigazione Laghi connect the shores year round, the mid-lake triangle has hops of 15 to 20 minutes, and a central-area day pass covers them. Trains link Milan to both Como and Varenna directly. A hire car would sit unused at your hotel while you took the boat anyway.
The trip is a loop from Milan, the international gateway. From there you settle into Como at the lake's south-west tip, then ride the ferries north to base in Bellagio, with day hops across the water to Varenna and Menaggio, before returning to Milan for onward travel.
Seven days is a comfortable, unhurried pace: time for the villa gardens, the funicular viewpoint, a couple of lakeside towns and plenty of slow lunches. With less time, base only in Varenna or Bellagio and ferry out from there. With more, add the western shore villas around Tremezzina or a day over the border in Lugano.
Arrive in Italy's style capital and the gateway to the lakes. See the Duomo and the Galleria, then take an early train north the next morning.
The lake's main town and rail gateway, a 40-minute train from Milan. Wander the walled old town, then ride the Como-Brunate funicular for a balcony view over the whole basin before the ferries north.
The "pearl of the lake", on the headland where Como's two arms divide. Stepped cobbled lanes climb from the water, and the gardens of Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni are the highlight. Its central position makes it the best base for ferry hops across the lake.
A romantic fishing village on the eastern shore, smaller and calmer than Bellagio. Walk the lakeside Passeggiata degli Innamorati and tour Villa Monastero's gardens. Varenna also has the area's main railway station, so it makes an easy arrival or departure point.
White chalk cliffs, a Norman conquest battlefield, cobblestoned medieval streets and a seaside city that refuses to be ordinary: this East Sussex road trip itinerary covers it all in seven days.
A relaxed resort on the western shore with a breezy lakefront piazza and an easygoing feel, and the springboard for walks above the lake or the bus over to Lugano. From here a ferry and train carry you back to Milan.
Spring to early autumn is the sweet spot, when the villa gardens are open and the ferries run their full timetable. April to June and September are loveliest, with mild weather and thinner crowds. July and August are hot and busy, so book beds and tour the gardens early in the day.
This is a train-and-ferry itinerary, not a drive. Trains to Varenna leave Milano Centrale; trains to Como leave Centrale and Cadorna. On the lake, buy a central-area ferry day pass for the Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio triangle, and check whether you want the quick hydrofoil or the slower scenic boat. Leave any hire car behind, as the villages are car-free in spirit and short on parking.
Ferry timetables thin out in winter and after early evening, so plan the last boat back to your base. Buy hydrofoil tickets at the pier counter before boarding. The lakeside towns involve steps and cobbles, so pack light and wear sensible shoes. Summer afternoons are hot, making a morning start for gardens and viewpoints the comfortable choice.
