- Collect the car at Sky Harbor airport. Summer afternoons top 40C, so hike early and carry plenty of water. Streets are steep and parking is tight. Park once and explore on foot. The State Historic Park opens 9 to 4:30. Trailhead car parks fill by mid morning. Start early or use the Sedona shuttle. A Red Rock Pass is needed to park at most trailheads. Drive Oak Creek Canyon northbound to climb the switchbacks, and stop at Oak Creek Vista. Nights are cold at altitude, even in summer. Book South Rim lodging months ahead. Use the free shuttles; Hermit Road is closed to cars in peak season. Carry water on any descent. The Grand Canyon Railway leaves Williams at 9:30am; book ahead. Fill the tank here before the long I-17 leg south. Allow about three hours from Williams. Return the hire car with a full tank, and build in buffer time before any flight.
